Hi there & welcome. For those of you that are new to my blog, I’m Kelly, eclectic creative, DIYer, vintage lover, renderer, digital stager, eDesign business owner and toddler mama here at Great Oak Haven. It’s One Room Challenge time people!

If you haven’t heard of the ORC before it’s an amazing creative bi-annual event where Instagram home and DIY bloggers pick a room to revamp within a timeline and give you the inside scoop on it each week until the final reveal! Reveal day for the One Room Challenge is like watching the last 5 mins of an HGTV show but it’s on Insta and you can scroll through tons of gorgeous refreshed, revamped, magazine-worthy spaces in minutes. I have only been on “the gram” for about a year now so I have seen Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 ORC’s and they were so inspiring! I have been stalking my favorite accounts and planning on participating in the Spring 2020 ORC since the fall and now it’s here! This season is a bit different though since COVID is spreading it’s gloomy cloud on a little bit of everything. This year we have 8 weeks to complete a room instead of 6 weeks! WHAT! My first ORC and extra time- heck yes! And let me tell you the extra time is needed not just to jump over the COVID hurdle but also my friend indecision. I have changed plans about 5 times but I think I am finally onto something here.

A quick shoutout to Linda, the One Room Challenge creator, THANK YOU! This woman has been doing a ton of work to make sure this event can still be successful despite all the COVID challenges! Thank you for all that you do Linda, this event really does spread so much inspiration, joy, and creativity. All the good things we need at a time like this so all your extra efforts are so much appreciated!

Okay so now that you know a little about me and The One Room Challenge let me tell you a little about my project. I have been flip-flopping on which room to do. Originally, we were going to get going on our front foyer with a new front door, and adding a powder room but because of COVID we decided to pause on that. Then I figured I would revamp our formal living room into a music room since we were gifted a beautiful piano … but once again since COVID hit that’s now lower on the list. We finally decided, last week, to prioritize the patio since we are spending way more time at home and outdoors we need it to really function for us and feel like an oasis we can escape to on the daily So we have finally landed on a space as of May May 6th! Oh, and when I say WE, I mean my husband, Brian and I. He may make an appearance on here in a photo or video since he’s agreed to do some yard-work for the project! We have done one other big DIY project together in our home, our first ever project 2 years ago and it was a pink retro bathroom (LINK HERE).

The first thing people usually ask about this project is if we got along. To be completely honest we did not get along the entire time but we sure did balance each other out! Even more honesty… it wouldn’t be like us to get along 100% of the time on any project. We are both opinionated and fiery personalities that do love each other fiercely as well as challenge one another. Add being sleep deprived from juggling a 6-month-old; we weren’t perfect but we did manage to do good work and learn from each other. His analytical and mathematical brain balanced out my creative and conceptual mind- he was also the starter and I was the finisher of the project. Yin & Yang all the way. We got it done and it turned out great and we also learned a lot about what we were capable of when we use each of our strengths. For example, there was no way I was going to lay tile around the toilet and do all the math to make sure it was just right and there was no way he was going to keep the grout in the lines and watch 100 youtube videos to make sure it was done correctly LOL. We figured it out! Now we get to do it again with the patio and we are already off to a great start.

THE PATIO

Here’s our glorious BEFORE patio picture on this gorgeous rainy day! It’s nothing special yet but boy do I have plans.

THE CONCEPT

I have decided to create an eclectic bohemian oasis with modern pops of chevron and stripes along with a sprinkling of whimsy. The goal for this project is to create a better flow on our patio and add personality and privacy to our outdoor oasis. Bonus points if I also can make the time to add a fencing/railing/childproofing system to keep my toddler in our yard!
