Week 5 is coming to you from Del Mar beach, California! That’s right… I left my home in the middle of our reno project to go on vaycay! Wahoo! I needed this break. We, the hubs and I, are out here for a family wedding and extended the trip to be a working vacation and we are loving it. Fun Fact- I also shared on Insta this week- Brian, the hubs, and I met out here in San Diego on a flight from San Diego to Baltimore in 2011. We started dating as soon as we got back and have been together ever since! Wow, it’s been 10 years now since I met Brian and we have been married for almost 8 years… so weird to put in writing!

Okay -back to the One Room Challenge. This week the crew came in and started working. The chimney was taken down brick by brick from top to bottom so that we can open up the Living and Dining Room and the Kitchen Wall will be taken out between the Kitchen and Dining for a completely seamless view from the kitchen to the living room. I am SOOOOO excited about this. I will see the reno updates when I get back to my house this Wednesday and will share all the progress with you on next week’s Blog Post.

This week, I also shared on Insta stories that our stairs from the living room to the bedroom level will be reconfigured! So that’s a biggie… but it does allow me to rethink the stairwell a bit. I may be able to open up the staircase more which would make for a very light and airy design. So I am exploring ideas here since stairs are really amazing architectural elements that I do not get to design often. Trying to make lemonade out of lemons here for sure, with every renovation challenge there comes an opportunity to get creative.

Due to all the unexpected changes in the design the main Living Room, Dining Room, and Kitchen will not be done in time for the ORC reveal which I know would have been tight anyway even if there weren’t any changes. Now that we are raising the floor level, the doors, and changing the stairs – I will save this reveal for after the ORC. The room I have decided to share instead is our Family Room! This room serves so many purposes for us it also holds a ton of sentimental value since it’s the place that our family spends the most time together, other than the kitchen, and it was the first room designed as a playroom for my little one. Since moving into our home 3.5 years ago this room went from the place where we watched movies and entertained guests, to the place where our daughter played and then learned to walk and crawl. A corner of it also functions as my office. This room will be getting a total revamp in flooring, lighting, and layout. I am sad to say goodbye to our rainbow mural…but I am pumped to paint the dang mismatched brick, create a new mural, and create a more functional office space. This will be a lot to pull off in the 3 weeks remaining in the One Room Challenge but I will have help from the crew!

Check out the plans below!
