Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 (you are here) | Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6 | Week 7…
Hello, fellow design enthusiasts! We’re officially three weeks into the One Room Challenge, and guess what? The hubs and I took a sledgehammer to our bathroom. That’s right—demo day!
If you’re new here, welcome! This bathroom makeover is part of the One Room Challenge, a magical event with media sponsor Apartment Therapy. It’s like a design marathon where creativity meets chaos, and we get to cheer each other on from our DIY & design corners. So, after you read this, make sure to hop over to some other blogs and shower them with comments and Insta love—because who doesn’t appreciate a good virtual high-five?
Now, let’s get back to the action! This week, I finally unleashed my inner wrecking ball on an old vanity that I’ve loathed for years. Seriously, it was like therapy—swinging that sledgehammer felt better than a glass of wine paired with a brownie sundae after a long day of parenting (and we all know that’s saying something!).
Six years ago, we hesitated to tear out the vanity because of the daunting wall tiles and the fear of what we might find underneath. But this weekend, I discovered what lay beneath—and spoiler alert: it’s subfloor. Yep, installing a vanity on subfloor isn’t exactly best practice, but hey, it was a way for whoever installed it to save some bucks on tile and flooring, leaving the next people to figure out what the heck they want to do with it!
I thought I’d find pink tile under the vanity, so I could just slap down some peel-and-stick luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and call it a day. But nope! Never did I imagine I’d be disappointed not to find pink tile in my home, but alas, that day came and went this weekend, leaving me with a new design dilemma to solve.
The dilemma? The retro 4×4 wall tiles deserve a floor that doesn’t make them look like they’re stuck in a bad 50s flashback. The current faux marble LVT is giving me major “I’m just a band-aid” vibes, while the new tile? Pure perfection. Can you say “design justification loop”?
So, my mind is racing. I’m trying to justify spending more money on floors because this tile is just so beautiful. I think it’s going to happen, but I’m definitely going to need some professional help. I decided on grabbing a pro to help on plumbing too since I have no desire to flood my home so I might as well grab someone awesome to teach me a thing or 2 about flooring, tile, and drywall. I’ve got somebody I’ve worked with before in mind and I will give him a shout out once it’s all official.
Stay tuned for next week to see if the floors are actually happening! Oh, and I’ve also done a bit of a pivot on the vanity, which I’ll be puzzling out over the next week and pinning down ASAP so I can share with you, because we’ll be at the halfway mark next week and I won’t be able to make any more big changes without losing my mind!
See ya next week, Homelovers!
