Hello home lovers, it is officially week 6 of The One Room Challenge! The Dreamy Kid’s Bathroom project is rocking and rolling toward reveal week. Here are the latest updates….
If you’re new here, welcome! This bathroom makeover is part of the One Room Challenge, a magical event with media sponsor Apartment Therapy. It’s like a design marathon where creativity meets chaos, and we get to cheer each other on from our DIY & design corners. So, after you read this, be sure to hop over to some other blogs and shower them with comments and Insta love—because who doesn’t appreciate a good virtual high-five?
So remember last week when I finally decided to switch to the 2 sconce plan instead of 1… well those gorgeous little sconces won’t come in for 3-5weeks so I flipped back to plan A. Wahoo! I still love the look and it’s wired now so no turning back!
Also we got our throne back this week! Toilet is in and secure with Clean Seal high performance caulk by Sashco (gifted). I have to give them a shout out. My handyman has been around the block he renovates bathrooms for a living and he loved working with the caulk and could tell it was high quality just by working with it for 5 minutes. This specific CleanSeal Product was formualted to provide a lon-lasting seal around kitchen and bathroom fixtures, plus it prevents water damage and mold growth in high moisture areas, which makes it ideal for our project. I have some 2 year old grout in my home from our recent renovation and it is not holding up well so I plan on swapping it out with Sashco products ASAP, because I am a busy mom and business owner who doesn’t have time to be worrying about or scrubbing moldy caulk.
Another BIG decision this week was what the heck to do for a backsplash. The counter of the vanity is a sleek white porcelain with a little lip on the back making a standard 4 inch stone splash not ideal. So we went for it and had our amazing handyman, Josimar, install the floor tile up the wall so it pops up a few inches above the sink! I can’t get over how good it looks, and we even created a little wavy pattern that made it extra special. The kids were very excited and so am I, it’s such a special whimsical touch that you don’t see in a lot of bathrooms.
This week I also strapped on my oh-so-chic respirator mask to cover the tile patchwork in a heavy-duty, epoxy Tube & Tile paint. This stuff REEKS and you do not want to do this work without a mask and goggles, your whole house open on a perfect weather day, and a really good playlist to help distract you from the intense smell! We used this exact Tub & Tile product 6 years ago when we covered our retro 5″x5″ tiles with paint to give them a fresh look. The paint has lasted a long time and only chipped in one small area around the tub which I touched up this time around as well. The biggest perks of this product have to be it’s price tag, low maintenance, and durability. For under $50 you can give your tile a fresh new look which is so budget-friendly compared to fully gutting all the tile in our bathroom. Plus it’s so easy to clean, no more scrubbing grout, you get bright white tile, with bright white grout and you don’t have to worry about mold or discoloration at all. It has stayed very pristine with very little maintenance for 6 years so I am pleased with it. Note- this is not a beginner DIY product. The prep alone takes about an hour to scrub, wipe down, and tape everything. The paint is a 2 part 4:1 mix which turns out to be a very liquidy, intense chemical-smelling paint and it requires a respirator mask, goggles, gloves, and a lot of patience and attention to detail. It dries so fast but drips really easily so you have to be confident enough with your painting skills to roll over the drips quickly and trust the process. The first coat looks terrible and the second and third coats were amazing but you have to keep using the drippy gooey toxic stuff with an hour dry time in between and it’s just not a fun job. Worth it, YES, but I am not signing myself up for that again anytime soon! Glad it’s done and looking fabulous!
Last but not least… The shower fixtures are in baby and they are absolutely stunning. Speakman’s Neo line of brushed bronze shower fixtures are perfect for our Dreamy Kids bathroom design since one of my daughter’s favorite colors is gold, adding these bright fixtures was a no-brainer. Here’s a sneak peak of them (gifted, and you can also shop them HERE).
I cannot wait to get the walls painted this week, the vanity and lighting in, and the ceiling wallpapered! Stay tuned friends and go check out some other amazing One Room Challenge projects HERE!
